Involvement and Polar Explorers have more in common

When we heard about the BIG expedition to the North Pole, we jumped at the chance to support the team on this vital trip.

Our packaging business Invopak is supplying 500 metal canisters for the collection of samples in an urgent study into Arctic Ocean sea ice. The expedition is called B.I.G, which stands for “Before It’s Gone”.

It’s led by explorer Felicity Aston MBE, who was the first woman to ski alone across Antarctica, covering 1,744km in 59 days.

Obviously, there’s a world of difference between packaging and polar exploration – but, talking to Felicity, we’ve been interested to discover all sorts of parallels in the way Involvement people work and how Felicity’s team are preparing for their challenge.

Creation of High Performance Teams

For a start, we both stand or fall by the creation of High Performing Teams, where everyone understands the importance of what they do and how their role is integral to achieving our purpose.

And, like the expedition, we don’t get put off track by any surprises when it comes to reaching an important destination. We always ‘pre-mortem’ everything that could possibly stand in our way when we take on a new project or see a storm cloud gathering – like the current global economic turmoil.

In addition, we're both very clear on our Purpose.

This is the foundation of building a High Performing and resilient team. A Purpose is the single statement that unites a team, through thick or thin, they will always have their Purpose to align their focus and guide decision making.
